Real Time Barrier Verification of a Shallow Set Casing Plug on Wired Drill Pipe.

Challenge

The planned batch drilling of 5 wells would need to be temporary plugged before the completion to be run. The challenge and risk for pressure build up under the upper most casing plug is a safety hazard, in regard to retrieve the barrier on Drill pipe.

Solution

Monitoring would be provided by connecting an 8.15in OD Iconic Digital Transponder (iDT) to the shallow 13 3/8in Casing Plug, where the iDT would transmit wireless live well pressure data configured for transmission to Wired Drill Pipe. This is achievable due to the new development of the Wired Drill Pipe Adapter (WDP)

Operation

After the casing was set and tested according to the operator's speciation, a deep-set casing plug was run, and leak tested from above.

After,a shallow casing plug completed withan iDT was run and set at 502.92 mMD and leak tested from above.

Exit tests were performed and the well were then abandoned for 8 mounts before the rig returned to the well for the completion phase.

The WDP adapter were made up to the casing plug pulling string, and a communication validation were performed as per procedure.

During RIH, pressure signals transmitted from the iDT below the casing plug were received by the wired drill pipe adapter.

At depth, before latching on to the plug a series of data points were analyzed and validated. From the validated data stream, overbalance were established on the plugbefore latching and equalizing the plug. The data transmitted from the iDT via the WDP adapter were continuously displayed on the WellDatasystem on surface during the pulling operation.  

Value Created

By utilizing the iDT and wired drill pipe technology, valuable data in terms of pressure build up or temperature changes below the barrier will be detected before latching on to the casing plug. The usage of data and “knowledge” leads to a controlled removal of the barrier.

The technology is an enabler for a multiplicity of applications where well control is challenging and would need to be prioritized.
