Real Time Barrier Verification of a Shallow Set Barrier for Pre-P&A – Long Term Suspension

Overview

The objective of the operation was to perform Pre-P&A of an old oil producer well in the Norwegian continental shelf. The well is temporary P&A with a deep-set plug and and a shallow-set plug in the 9 5/8” casing. This workover operation is to extend the temporary P&A scope by equalizing and pulling of the existing shallow plug in well. Thereafter, will install a new mechanical plug will include an iDT (acoustic P/T monitoring sensor). Monitoring of the primary barrier integrity was required in order to comply with industry’s regulations and execute this operation in a safe manner.

Overview

The client needed to perform a validation verification on the tubing/casing cement for a permanent plug and abandon campaign performed abroad. In order to prove the regulator that these techniques can be used successfully, the quality of the cement has to be verified by a positive pressure test.

Overview

The planned batch drilling of 5 wells would need to be temporary plugged before the completion to be run. The challenge and risk for pressure build up under the upper most casing plug is a safety hazard, in regard to retrieve the barrier on Drill pipe.

Real Time Monitoring of Plug Barriers during Long Time Suspension for Temporary P&A

Overview

The client needed to perform Temporary P&A of a well located in the Norwegian continental shelf. In addition the operator will remove the Xmas tree for it to be refurbished and used on another location. The operator planned to set two barrier plugs to temporarily abandon the well; one shallow- and one deep-set plug. The planned suspension time for the well were estimated to be 3-5 years. Monitoring of the barrier integrity was required in order to comply with industry regulations and to execute this operation in a safe manner.

Verification of a Shallow set Plug for Xmas Tree Maintenance

Overview

The client needed to perform a valve changeout on the X-mas tree. To be able to execute this operation in a safe and effective manner, there was a need to set two shallow barrier plugs above the Down Hole Safety Valve (DHSV). The plugs were planned to be run on Slickline and set with conventional timer-based setting tools. Since the Retrievable bridge plugs were to be set close to each other, conventional volume control could not accurately deliver a good leak test of the barrier.The optimum method to assure a proven barrier required monitoring of the small volume between the installed bridge plugs during leak testing
