Verification of a Shallow set Plug for Xmas Tree Maintenance

Challenge

The client needed to perform a valve changeout on the X-mas tree. To be able to execute this operation in a safe and effective manner, there was a need to set two shallow barrier plugs above the Down Hole Safety Valve (DHSV). The plugs were planned to be run on Slickline and set with conventional timer-based setting tools.

Since the Retrievable bridge plugs were to be set close to each other, conventional volume control could not accurately deliver a good leak test of the barrier. The optimum method to assure a proven barrier required monitoring of the small volume between the installed bridge plugs during leak testing

Solution

The 3.60in OD Iconic Digital Transponder (iDT) to be mounted on the shallow Bridge Plug. The iDT to be set up for live monitoring and recording at the wellhead. In addition, a contingency solution for recording to memory to be included in the BHA for the slickline string.

Operation:

The first Bridge Plug was set with use of the timer-based setting tool at 198mMD, and inflow tested from below and leak tested from above (20/270 Bar). The shallow Bridge Plug was set at 55,7mMD, and leak tested form above (20/270Bar).

During the leak test of the shallow barrier, the iDT continuously transmitted pressure and temperature data from above and below the barrier to surface, and the signals were picked-up by the surface logging system. During the leak test the operator was able to send commands directly to the iDT and “prompt” for additional P/T data throughout the pre-programmed transmission sets.

In addition to transmitting directly to surface, a Slickline wireline adapter was incorporated in the string to assure data collection. This option enabled for data sent from the iDT to be stored in the memory module in the wireline adapter, and act as a secondary data collector. The data from the memory wireline adapter was downloaded and included in the final report to the client

Value created

The iDT enabled the client to make fast decisions during the operation and act according to the test results from the iDT attached to the Bridge Plug. Due to the use of the iDT, the operation to prove the barrier were performed in one run with zero NPT accrued on delivering the result of the leak test.

Benefits

•One run solution with standard equipment and operations

•P/T live data displayed at the well head

•Cost effective

•Time saving

•Slick line operation enabled
